How Long Does It Take to Get a Marriage Licence in Ontario?

Heads up couples! Before you continue pouring yourselves over the nitty-gritty components of your wedding planning, make sure you have your marriage licence ready too. The City of Toronto has a dependable website that contains the step by step process for marriage services, including marriage licence application. The process is pretty much the same for the whole of Ontario. Here is a brief gist of what to expect. We’ve also included good resources to check out at the end of the article for a more thorough explanation.

What to expect

Getting your marriage licence is a fast and straightforward process as long as you have the requirements ready. Walk-ins were previously allowed. However, due to the COVID 19 pandemic, an online application is now required before you can come in for your licence. Once you’ve submitted your form and you receive your appointment permit, you need to prepare two pieces of acceptable government-issued identification. The website clearly states which IDs are accepted.

Things to prepare

On the day of your appointment, make sure you have the following prepared:

  • Appointment permit
  • Completed application dated with original signatures
  • Two pieces of original and valid government-issued IDs for each person. (2 for you and 2 for your partner)
  • If you or your partner is divorced, make sure you have the documentation.
  • $145 for the marriage licence fee.

On the day of your appointment

You can get your marriage licence from the North York Civic Centre. Strict health protocols are implemented. Masks are mandatory and physical distancing is highly encouraged. You must come on time or else your appointment will be forfeited. Once you’re in, it will take 15-20 minutes to process your application and issue your licence.
